Abby Maria Hemenway (October 7, 1828 – February 24, 1890) was a Vermont teacher, author and historian. ==Early life== Abby Hemenway was born in Ludlow, Vermont on October 7, 1828. She attended Black River Academy, afterwards beginning a career as a teacher in Michigan.〔Virginia Wharton, (History of Albany, Vermont, 1806-1991 ), 1991, page 23〕〔Jennifer Scanlon, Shaaron Cosner, (American Women Historians, 1700s-1990s: A Biographical Dictionary ), 1996, page 108〕 Hemenway returned to Ludlow, became interested in publishing literature specific to Vermont, and attempted to attract supporters for her project. Refused backing from established printers and publishers, in 1858 she published on her own (''Poets and Poetry of Vermont'' ), an anthology of verse by Green Mountain State writers.〔Marguerite Van Die, (Religion, Family, and Community in Victorian Canada: The Colbys of Carrollcroft ), 2006, page 217〕〔Marcus Davis Gilman, (The Bibliography of Vermont ), 1897, page 121〕
